Nanophase Technologies Corporation

Please describe the work that you are doing that you consider to be the most innovative and of the greatest likely long-term significance.

Nanophase Technologies is an industry -leading nanocrystalline materials innovator and manufacturer with an integrated family of nanomaterial technologies. The entire focus of Nanophase is nanotechnology, with two disctinct and patented processes for the preparation and commercial manufacturing of nanopowder metal oxides, i.e., aluminum oxide, zinc oxide, cerium oxide, and several others. Nanophase has developed a process, discrete particle encapsulation, to caot the surface of its nanoparticles with a thin polymeic shell that enables compatability of the particles with a wide variety of fluids, resins, polymers. Nanophase has developed technology to permit the dispersion of its nanoparticles in water and a variety of of polar and non-polar organic fluids. This allows Nanophsae to supply concentrated, ready-to-use nanoparticle dispersions, eliminating the need for customers to disperse hte nanoparticles themselves. Nanophaes's family of integrated technologies economically produces nanocrystalline materials, then nano-engineers them to fit a customer need.

Nanophase produces engineered nanomaterial products for averiety of diverse markets: personal care, sunscreens, aabrasion-resistant applications, environmental catalysts, antimicrobial products, and a variety of ultra-fine polishing applications, including semiconductor wafers, hard disk drives and optics. Various applications include wood preservation, anti-fouling and anti-microbial coatings, fuel cells, catalytic converters, UV-attenuation coatings, scratch resistant coatings, charge dissipating coatings, deodorant/antipersperants, depilatory/shaaving products, and others. New marets and applications are constantly being developed. The Company markets its products to target markets and customers, including multinational corporationsan Fortune 500 companies.

The company business model revolves around strategic partnerships. Nanophase has worldwide mutually exclusive relationships with BASF for the supply of zinc oxide into sunscreen applications; with Rohm & Haas Electronic Materials (Rodel) for ceria dispersions used in CMP (chemical mechancical planarization) semiconductor applications; with Altana Chemie AG for innovative products in coatings, plastics and electrical insulation applications. While products are available as powders, they are also offered as coated materials and/or stable dispersions in aqueous or organic media, providing paratners with nanomaterials in readily usable forms which often lead to decresed time to market.
