Gen9

What is your corporation most trying to accomplish with its new innovation?

DNA is the future of global manufacturing. Through synthetic biology, this important molecule offers a revolutionary opportunity to enable the low-cost, high-yield, environmentally responsible production of the goods and services that give us power, keep us healthy, and more. Gen9 aims to realize the full potential of synthetic biology by taking it from an R&D cottage industry to a robust and reliable component of the global manufacturing process.

What do you think sets your corporation’s work apart from the work of others in your field?

Gen9 has pioneered a number of innovative approaches to molecular biology and the applied application of semiconductor technology, microfluidics and automation that have significantly advanced the state of the art in synthetic biology. Gen9’s innovative BioFab platform has the capacity to generate, at scale, the longest, most accurate, lowest-cost gene constructs available in just a few square feet of laboratory space.

What or who inspired your corporation to come up with this innovation?

We are inspired everyday by the vision and work of our co-founders George Church, Drew Endy and Joe Jacobson. Their dedication and passion for the field of synthetic biology has led to a number of important scientific advances that are allowing us to meet the rapidly increasing global demand for synthesized DNA.

What role has serendipity played in the turning points in your corporation’s mission?

Luck favors the prepared and there have been a number of serendipitous events and meetings which enabled Gen9’s technology to be funded, developed and commercialized.

What have been the greatest challenges that your corporation has encountered in developing your innovation?

Maintaining faith and forging ahead in the face of tragedies both big and small as well as creating and maintaining a dynamic culture for employees to excel.

Do you believe leaders and innovators have certain qualities that they all share? If so, what?

The ability to motivate, to think beyond what is possible today and above all else, a passion for what they are doing.

How would your corporation most like to change the world through its work?

To reduce the world’s dependence on petroleum-based products and to enable next-generation medical treatments that are more personalized, affordable and globally available.
